Oulu - Finland

My fathers side of the family comes from Oulu (Uleåborg) in Finland. My grandmother still lives there and over the years I have gone there during summer time to visit. Oulu is a beautiful city in the summer time. Although not as hot as the Mediterranean but just as pleasant.

In the town center there is a market hall which sell local produce, lots of fish and local cheese. Pirogues with rice, carrot and other fillings is a local specialty. Small salted fish (Muikku) baked into bread is another exotic dish. In the square outside the market hall there is a market with fruit and vegetables several times a week. The northern cloudberries can be found together with souvenirs made from rein deer bone and handicraft items. The bread Rieska is also typical for this area in Finland. Next to the market square is the city harbor. Since Oulu is situated by the Baltic Sea water it is a great summer city. The beach Nallikari a little bit outside the city center almost reminds you of a beach in Italy or Spain.
