Florida
Two years ago me and the family made a classical road trip on the east cost of Florida. The trip started with a visits to Disney World in Orlando. We chose the park Magic Kingdom since our kids' age (6 and 8) was perfect for this park. The rides are fun but not too daring. We stayed at the Wyndham Garden Lake Buena Vista in Disney Springs. The hotel was just fine and close to Disney Springs, an area with lots of shops and restaurants. At the hotel you could have Mickey waffles for breakfast and two days a week Disney characters visit the breakfast. Since the hotel is registered Disney hotel you also have the advantage to pre-book up to three rides at the Disney park 60 days before the visit. This and fast track passes was great since you spend less time queuing at the park. The hotel also had a shuttle bus service to the parks.
After Orlando the next stop on the road trip was Fort Lauderdale, where we only made one night stop. We only enjoyed the great beach for one afternoon. The next day we started the journey towards Key West. The journey itself along the Overseas Highway (Highway 1) was fantastic. The road consist of many bridges over the small island all the way down to Key West.
Since there was road work along the way the trip from Fort Lauderdale to Key West took some extra two or three hours which was unfortunate. When we got to Key West it was at least worth it. A cozy town with small shops, cafés and bars. Key lime pie was invented here so this was a must.
We stayed the night at Key Largo back on the Highway 1 at Gilberts resort. The hotel was in a nice location with a small private beach. Dinner was held at the Tiki bar, very nice, but filled with mosquitos. The sunset however compensated for the small insects.
After a stop at the outlet in Florida Keys the road trip's last stop was Miami Beach. The modern hotel in Bay Harbor in north Miami Beach had two pools and was not far from the beach. We spent 4th of July here and enjoyed the celebrations and fire works in the evening. Oceans Drive is a busy street with bars, restaurants and night life. A must when you are in Florida is to visit the Everglades and see some alligators.
The visit to the Gator park was started with a boat ride and finished with a show and information about the alligators.
