10 useful tips for everyday cooking in a relaxed way
1. During the weekend make a plan for next week. I have a small white board in the kitchen were I write down planned meals for the upcoming week. For days when the kids have activities or I have a late work meeting I plan something quick - pasta, ham and veggies for example.
2. Try to make at least one dish of the things you have at home. Save money and the planet.
3. Shop for groceries only once a week. Make a shopping list when you plan your meals. Make a list of the items you need for the upcoming week. Make sure you don't write items you all ready have in the fridge or the cupboards. Don't forget breakfast items, fruit for kids, toilet paper etc.
4. After dinner look in the fridge and make a judgement of if you need to cook anything tomorrow. Can the left overs be used in a new way with some extra veggies or some pasta?
5. After dinner each day look at what's on the menu tomorrow. Do I have everything or do I need to get something extra on the way home? It's very annoying to realize you miss some ingrediencies when you are about to start cooking.
6. In the evening, should I bring something out from the freezer to defrost in the fridge for dinner next day? This is an green option to defrost frozen food. The fridge gets an extra cool boost and you don't need to defrost in the microwave.
7. Make every one in the family aware of the dinner plans. Can one of the kids start to prepare something when he or she gets home from school?
8. When I cook I use the oven if possible. The things cooking in the oven cooks it's self and you have more time for setting up the table and prepare a salad.
9. My kids do not enjoy cooked veggies so I often save some fresh ones and put them in small bowls like a veggie buffet. This is a useful way to make the kids eat veggies and not have a conflict about it.
10. Make a lunch box of the left overs from dinner. It's better for your health instead of getting some fast food at work. You also save money. A home cooked lunch cost about one tenth of a bought one.
